Master of education thesis - integrating mindfulness in second grade reading comprehension

The goal of this action research project is to explore the link between mindfulness and positive thinking with meditation exercises and student reading comprehension. Reading comprehension includes the ideas of reading for understanding, remembering often complex themes, as well as written and oral fluency after reading. At many schools, students often struggle with grade level writing and reading skills on standardized tests. It can be difficult for students to grasp the significance of certain fiction and nonfiction texts. I will explore mindfulness games and strategies to refocus students before and after reading texts, stories, and poems. Guided meditation will be utilized to understand the link between visualization and reading comprehension. I will study if students can use mindfulness and meditation strategies to visualize plot, setting, theme, and character. I will also investigate whether or not the confidence gained during mindfulness affects student performance on formal assessments in this content area. The purpose of this project is to improve student comprehension and understanding of reading content. In this regard, I will study student oral and written performance, as well as self-efficacy during reading instruction. I will implement mindfulness games, activities, and written exercises, along with in-class guided meditation in my classroom.

Throughout my thesis, I utilize autoethnography to explore the importance of women in music. I explore the cultural significance rock and punk revolutionaries such as Carrie Brownstein, Kate Nash, and Patti Smith. These women created new platforms of self-expression and resistance against injustice. Fans around the world have been inspired to create new media spaces for inclusion and representation of women in music. I investigate the power of blogs and fan websites that bring women of diverse backgrounds together to learn to play music and fight for representation in the industry. Through Do It Yourself (DIY) methods, girls and women are redefining music and our world everyday.
